to Dr. Flinton’s forensic work:SFFI

Dr. Flinton practices clinical and forensic psychology in Oakland and San Francisco, California. He provides individual and group therapy. Currently, he facilitates sexuality groups for men with compulsive sexual behaviors and paraphilic disorders, as well as a group for couples seeking to enhance intimacy and communication. He works from a humanistic, cognitive-behavioral theoretical perspective that is rooted in scientific research.

Dr. Flinton first developed a focus on issues related to sexuality while working in a community mental health program in San Francisco in the late 1980s. During that time, he worked with wide range clients with varying mental health issues related to intimacy, relationships, and sexuality. His clientele were people in relationships and or those who desired to be in one. He also worked with clients undergoing gender reassignment. A major part of Dr. Flinton’s practice revolved around helping his clients explore their sexuality in a way that maximized intimacy and sexual gratification while limiting potentially self-defeating beliefs and patterns of behavior.

In 1992, Dr. Flinton began working at the Center for Special Problems, a community mental health agency that focuses on issues that are not typically addressed by
San Francisco’s mental health community. Specifically,
Dr. Flinton provided intake assessments, individual therapy, and group therapy to trans-gendered individuals, victims of sexual abuse, and sexual offenders. In 1995, he helped found a forensic mental health agency, Pacific Forensic Psychology Associates, which provides treatment services to individuals accused and/or convicted of sexual crimes. Between 1995 and 2000, he undertook an intensive study of compulsive sexual behavior and paraphilias. Dr. Flinton started his own practice in 1999, which focused on issues related to sexuality and intimacy. About one third of his clients are men with compulsive sexual behaviors (e.g., internet use of pornography) and/or paraphilias and paraphilia-related sexual disorders. Another third are couples seeking assistance with their sexual relationships, intimacy, and communication. The final third are individuals who are victims of sexual abuse.

While maintaining his private practice he directed the San Francisco Bay Area clinics for Pacific Forensic Psychology Associates. In 2008, Dr. Flinton founded the San Francisco Forensic Institute. In addition to his continued work in the area of forensic assessment and treatment, he is committed to the ongoing exploration of healthy sex and sexuality.

Dr. Flinton is writing a book that focuses on how men talk about sexual issues in therapy. This will be his second book. The first, published in 2006, is entitled Engaging Resistance: Creating Partnerships for Change in Sexual Offender Treatment.
